Cases for individuals working with youth at risk of suicide

Utilizing cases to teach in suicide prevention is an effective way to prepare individuals for situations where someone may be at risk of committing suicide.

Cases can be utilized in many different ways and are often used as follows:

Group analysis: In small groups, participants discuss the case, analyzing the situation, identifying risk factors, and considering possible interventions.

Individual Reflections: Participants are encouraged to reflect on how they would handle the situation themselves and what their primary focus would be.

Practical exercise: Participants can engage in role-playing, where they take on the role of either the person considering suicide or the professional who has to manage the situation. This helps to practice communication techniques, empathy, and decision-making under pressure.
